Rmtimesng—Acting Zonal Head, NEMA Operation Office Sokoto, Dr Kofoworola Soleye, has harped on the need for precautionary measures against fire disasters.
Soleye stressed this during a sensitization campaign at Sokoto Central Market, during which the Fire Prevention Officer of Sokoto State Fire Service Malam Nuhu Lawal led demonstrations on handling fire incidents.
The NEMA Sokoto boss represented by the Unit Head of Planning Mr Tukur Abubakar described the initiative as a proactive approach to disaster management by the agency.
He noted dry season as prone to fire outbreaks especially around the states in the zone.
” The market people need to be oriented on the way of preventing the fire and also controlling the fire in case it occurs,” he stated.
Soleye expressed optimism that the programme would empower them with the required knowledge to reduce the impact or occurrences of fire outbreaks in their shops and homes.
According to him, NEMA gives priority to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), urging support from all stakeholders.
Head of Operations, Sokoto State Fire Service Mr Mustapha Abubakar identified congestion, poor road passages and obstruction of movements as major challenges to fire fighting within market places.
Also speaking, Public Relations Officer (PRO) Federal Fire Service Sokoto, Isma’ila Suru said the awareness campaign was timely.
He stressed the need for more collaboration on fire prevention.
The acting General Manager, Central Market Sokoto, Alhaji Hassan Aliyu, called on traders to heed to precautionary measures to avoid fire incidents and the attendant losses.
Aliyu lauded NEMA for the exercise which he said would go a long way tackling fire disaster.
